My first trip to the Salt Flats was back in 2012. I was shooting video of the Richmond Stark streamliner, who I'm hoping to get footage of again this year. I definitely caught the "salt bug" and knew I had to come back again!
Brandon Snyder, who I met in 2012, gave me a call and told me about Jack Donahue out of North Carolina and the story of his Ford 8n farm tractor they were wanting to bring to the Salt Flats. There was a great historical connection in his story to Ab Jenkins who ran one in 1935 and the 100 Year Anniversary of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) who puts on the event. So I was initially planning to document Jack Donahue's Ford tractor, 8nCredible. Click here to read about Jack and the tractor. Unfortunately due to unforeseen engine issues, he couldn't make it in time for Speed Week. I hear he's coming out in September though and wish him the best. This year my son, Willie decided to make the trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats with me. I'm really glad we're hanging out taking pictures and sharing in this adventure. Bonneville I've come to know, is a special place, where racers and spectators freely share information and hot rodding's colorful history. On the Flats you get a sense of this history and maybe the sprits of hot rodder's past are cheering those racers on to eek out just a little bit more speed. If you haven't been, it's worth checking out. A guy last night said, "After racing here for 13 years, I've never met anyone who said they hated it!" This site documents our days here at Wendover, the event, the cars, the people and the place. |
